The event was The Lion King Carnival. At a time when Disneyland Resort Paris was slap bang in the middle of its second major financial restructuring, the executives and entertainment directors placed all their faith in a well-proven modern classic, the most successful animated film of all time.
Kicking off with this month-long carnival event in February, which featured a “Circle of Life Ceremony” on Central Plaza starring a real lion cub, the Year of The Lion King culminated in June that year with the premiere of Videopolis’ Broadway-style musical, The Legend Of The Lion King.
What instantly made The Lion King Carnival a cut above its disappointing and poorly executed Jungle Book predecessor was not the presence of a real “Simba”, but of a special fireworks show in his name — in February!
The short show blended a suite of music from The Lion King with simple light projections and small ground-based fireworks. Notice the effect of the sun rising upwards across Sleeping Beauty Castle in the opening moments, and the neat choreography of the fireworks to the music in the final moments of this short but sweet — if badly-named — fireworks show.
