Sixteen years ago this week, Disneyland Resort Paris was gearing up for its fateful grand opening. Sixteen years ago this week, the final rehearsals were taking place for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. Sixteen years later, it’s still here.
This one dinner show has seen a lot of change. Not in its performance or dramatizations of the wild American West — all around it. As Disney Village is well into its biggest round of changes for over a decade, it seems like a good time to look back on the early days of the Village’s only constant.
From LA Bar & Grill to Café Mickey, Crescend’O to Grease the Musical, Frank Gehry minimalist to colourful inflated balloons, the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show has always been there. Not only has it racked up a record number of performances; it remains the biggest Disney dinner show in the entire world, still entirely unique to the Paris resort.
This promotional video from the early 1990s shows key scenes from the show, reactions from French guests wearing delightful ’90s fashions and even a few quick shots of the old Disney Village — then known of course as Festival Disney — the one with the minimal square buildings, huge neon signs and starry sky above.
You can also see the old entrance building of the show, which now lurks behind the new foyer built in 1996 with the opening of the Gaumont Cinema.
Pay particularly close attention at 6:32 minutes in, when you see a pretty female Cast Member who has attempted to perch a cowboy hat atop her ridiculously huge ’90s hairstyle (!).
