Unlike the other entertainment venues at Disneyland Park, The Chaparral Theater was not present in the park's opening day line-up. It was added three years later, in 1995, as part of a programme to add more capacity to the park on a strict budget. In its early years, the theatre was named simply 'The Chaparral Stage' and consisted of nothing more than a small wooden stage and a large seating area in the forest clearing. Without a roof or any shelter, the stage was used only during the Summer months.
With the introduction of a fully-fledged entertainment production in 1996, Pocahontas: Le Spectacle, the theatre's stage area was transformed with lush landscaping to depict the forests and waterfalls of Disney's Pocahontas, surrounding the rear of the stage with a grass berm and trees and providing muhc of the backdrop and core scenery construction which still exists to this day.
Major change came in 1998, when the success of the theatre led to the introduction first of a shelter for the seating area and later for the entire stage, providing a completely covered entertainment venue - albeit open to the elements at each side. This brought the name change to 'The Chaparral Theater' and a new year-round schedule of entertainment, with Mickey's Winter Wonderland premiering in November 1998 and becoming an instant success, returning each Winter to this day.
In a joint inauguration with 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril: Backwards!' on 1st April 2000, The Tarzan Encounter replaced Pocahontas and brought success to match that of Mickey's Winter Wonderland. The basic set elements of the former stage, such as the cave and rocky backdrop, were reused, but redressed in a lavish array of jungle plants and vines, with sound and lighting upgrades also appearing both at the show's launch and almost every year of its return so far.
