Fun Facts
The attraction apparatus making up
Dumbo the Flying Elephant since opening is infact the second model
manufactured for the park. The first was diverted to Magic Kingdom in
Florida at the last minute in 1991, to meet refurbishment deadlines for the
attraction's overhaul. The Paris team were therefore forced to build a
replacement in just months, though fortunately the attraction was still
ready in time for park opening. The rebuilt Floridian version opened
in 1993, though without some of the extravagant landscaping and water
features seen in Paris.
History Based
on the 1941 film, Dumbo the Flying Elephant first opened in Disneyland
California in August 1955, one month after park opening. Versions can
also be found at Magic Kingdom (1971), Tokyo Disneyland (1983) and Hong Kong
Disneyland (2005). The working title
of the attraction was '10 Pink Elephants on Parade' or 'Pink Elephants On
Parade', based on the dream sequence from the film, with the original ten
ride vehicles painted pink upon installation. The story goes that Walt
Disney then objected to the hallucination-themed attraction, and the
vehicles were subsequently rethemed to Dumbo himself.
When Disneyland's Fantasyland was remodelled in 1983, the attraction was
expanded to feature sixteen vehicles. Tokyo Disneyland is now the only
park to still feature the original design of 10 flying elephants. |
