History

Rainforest Cafe is located in the former building of Key West Sea Food, a sea food restaurant that opened with Disney Village (then Festival Disney) in 1992.  The unique design of the building towards La Marina was meant to give a modern slice of Floridian architecture, which was accompanied by the tropically-themed Hurricanes Discotheque upstairs.  An entire Key West expansion project for Festival Disney was planned in the area where McDonald's now stands, but was ultimately cancelled.

Key West Sea Food closed in 1998 to allow for Rainforest Cafe's opening in 1999.  The bare building was given modest rainforest details in various places, as if they had simply "exploded" out of the plain, Frank Gehry building itself, and the water area at the rear was populated with various rainforest animals, including elephants.

Rainforest Cafe restaurants can also be found at Disney's Animal Kingdom park, Downtown Disney in both Florida and California, and Tokyo Disney Resort's IKSPIARI.
